BIOFELT Non-Woven Felt Scaffolds (Printable)
Concordia’s BIOFELT® is a proprietary needle punched non-woven felt scaffold material that is highly porous (>97%), soft and flexible, biocompatible and enables human cells to grow into its 3D interconnected pores so that new natural tissue can be formed to replace and/or repair damaged human tissues.
History: Concordia’s involvement in tissue engineering scaffolds is a direct extension of the work done by Dr. Robert Langer’s laboratory at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Albany International Research Company starting in 1986. These scaffolds were developed from absorbable polymers utilizing extensive textile processing expertise to create non-woven substrates for tissue engineering. Concordia purchased the assets related to producing these scaffolds from Albany International Research Company in early 2005 and developed the BIOFELT brand of non-woven scaffolds.
Current Uses: Concordia Medical’s development relationships currently include
Dr. Laura Niklason at Yale University, Dr. John Mayer at Children’s Hospital Boston/Harvard Medical Center, Dr. Roy Aaron at Brown University/Lifespan,
Dr. Anthony Atala at Wake Forest University, as well as other leading research institutions in the United States, Europe and Asia. Pre-clinical applications include cardiovascular tissue regeneration for arteries and heart valves and orthopedic tissue regeneration of cartilage, and several clinical applications utilizing BIOFELT have been approved by the FDA in dental and urological surgery.
Specifications: Concordia’s BIOFELT is produced from medical grade bioresorbable polymeric fibers, including polyglycolic acid (PGA) and poly-L lactic acid (PLLA). BIOFELT can be specified with the following dimensions and characteristics:
Felt Dimensions:
20 cm x 30 cm (Full Sheet)
20 cm x 15 cm (Half Sheet)
10 cm x 10 cm (1/6th Sheet)
Thickness: 0.3 to 7 mm
Density: 30 to 300 mg/cc
Discs and Tubes: Sheets of BIOFELT can also be cut and formed into various shapes like discs and tubes. Discs are die cut in 1 mm increments from 5 mm to 20 mm, with custom size available upon request. Concordia has developed a proprietary method for forming seamless non-woven tubes which can be supplied in inner diameters from 3 mm to 15 mm and various lengths as specified by our customers.
BIOFELT scaffolds are supplied non-sterile, solvent scoured, vacuum-sealed in moisture barrier foil pouches and packed with desiccant for optimum storage and shelf life.
Special Orders: Concordia also produces special orders of BIOFELT made from custom polymers or customer supplied resins and fibers. Additionally, Concordia can produce felts that contain woven and/or knit scrims to achieve additional strength, while maintaining the advantage of high porosity values afforded by the non-woven component, and multi-layer/multi-density constructs with tailored degradation and/or fiber orientation properties.
